It would seem, that older people would have less confidence in their behaviors than would younger people. Moreover, it would seem that this would be so apparent that they would freely admit to it. Questionnaire data did not bear this out; perhaps the gap between feeling inadequate and admitting it negates the validity of answers to direct questioning. Low self-confidence, therefore, remains but an unconfirmed hypothesis with respect to the elderly.
Why do the elderly behave in a way suggesting that greater certainty and structure is desirable? First, there is decline in certain abilities with age, particularly those underlying the functions in which older people have shown inclinations toward cautiousness. Second, the social order values youth, not old age. Society meets man's aging with rejection and expectation of failure. It is to be expected, then, that aging man would withdraw, desire certainty, and inhibit his response to avoid mistakes. Third, other personality variables may relate to cautiousness. Anxiety, for example, thought to stem from feelings of inadequacy, may make for general withdrawal and cautious response. One study showed that congruence between cautiousness and feelings of elderliness was apparent when only a small amount of anxiety was present; when there was much anxiety, this congruence was not seen.
