AGE AND BEHAVIOR: RISK OF GAIN WITH CHANCE OF LOSS - DIFFERENT PROBLEMS FOR YOUNG AND OLD - NEEDS, PROBLEMS, AND CULTURAL DETERMINATION

Cautiousness was investigated in relation to the age and sex of the respondents, and also their level of education as a crude index of socioeconomic status. The different "life situations" of the young and aged central characters were taken as reflecting needs and problems of their respective generations (Botwinick, 1966).
The basic result of Wallach and Kogan (1961) was again seen in this study: The older adults responded in a more cautious manner than the younger adults; they seemed to want more assurance that the outcome would be favorable before recommending an action. Men and women were not very different in their levels and patterns of cautiousness. Neither were the education groups different in levels of cautiousness, but their patterns were different with respect to the 24 "life situations." This suggested that socioeconomic factors  may determine the specific approaches to various problems, but not the overall extent of cautiousness. A similar cultural role may be indicated in regard to aging. Those elderly people in this study who were of about the same level of education as those in the Wallach and Kogan (1961) study often demonstrated their cautiousness by way of different "life situations." Since Wallach and Kogan (1961) investigated people mostly from eastern Massachusetts and Botwinick (1966) examined people mostly from central North Carolina, it was suggested that the cautiousness in later life may be manifest in culturally different contexts.
