AGE AND BEHAVIOR: CAUTIOUSNESS IN DECISION - RISK OF GAIN WITH CHANCE OF LOSS - OLDER PEOPLE ARE MORE CAUTIOUS THAN YOUNGER PEOPLE
Wallach and Kogan (1961) compared young men with older men, and young women with older women in regard to cautiousness. In both comparisons, the older group was seen as the more cautious. The analysis focused on the content of the "life situations." Both older men and women seemed to be especially cautious in decisions involving financial matters. Not surprisingly, perhaps, for them the lure of substantial financial gain was not worth the possible loss of money-in-hand. Some of the 12 "life situations" reflected cautiousness in later life in one of the sexes, rather than in both. Wallach and Kogan reported that the older men seemed more cautious than the younger men in items dealing with professional failure and with death. Older women were more cautious than younger women in items concerning defeat in a game and in unsuccessful marriage. With the possible exception of the risk-of-death item differentiating only males, and the peculiarity of the game situation differentiating the females, Wallach and Kogan suggested the results were in accord with cultural expectation.
