AGE AND BEHAVIOR: PERSONALITY AND COGNITION IN CAUTIOUS BEHAVIOR - FACTORS RELATED TO CAUTIOUSNESS - PERSONALITY VARIABLES
Many facets of personality have already been seen to be intimately tied to patterns of cautiousness. Few aging studies, however, have aimed directly at determining the effect of a specific set of personality measures on cautiousness. A study by Kogan and Wallach (1961), involving the role of anxiety, is among the few. If failing abilities make for expectations of failure, if society frames human relations so that the aged are rejected, we might expect that the ensuing cautiousness would be laden with anxiety.
The study by Kogan and Wallach suggested instead a different role for anxiety. Women ranging in age from 51 to 86 years were given a test of anxiety (a group form of the MMPI, which was factor analyzed, yielding a large factor labeled "anxiety"). Low (factor) scores of anxiety were believed related to "satisfaction with or adjustment to one's acknowledged 'elderly' or 'non-elderly' status . . . [it] . . . might reflect the extent to which feeling of elderliness or non-elderliness are conflict free" (Kogan and Wallach, 1961). Feelings of elderliness were ascertained by what was called "subjective age." Each woman was asked, "Do you consider yourself elderly?" A "yes" was scored as 3, "undecided" as 2, and "no" as 1.
In addition, measures of cautiousness were made. The overall finding was that subjective feelings of elderliness were correlated with cautiousness in the low anxiety group, but not in the high. It was suggested that the low anxiety women, whether realistically or not, may have been reasonably satisfied with their self-perceptions. If they saw themselves as elderly, they were cautious; if they didn't, they weren't cautious. The anxious women, on the other hand, were thought of as in conflict with regard to their elderliness. These women were cautious in ways unrelated to their self-perceptions.
Despite the rather complicated role anxiety played in the study of Kogan and Wallach (1961), the more simple role suggested earlier is not to be disregarded without evidence, i.e., anxiety may be part of the cautiousness associated with feelings of inadequacy resulting from declining abilities and cultural expectation. The omission error and all the rest can be seen as a general withdrawal, perhaps attributed to—or at least associated with—a high level of anxiety (Eisdorfer, 1965). Anxiety is only one of many dimensions of personality which may relate to cautiousness.
