AGE AND BEHAVIOR: SLOW RESPONSE TO ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULATION - INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES
The foregoing implies great variability and individual differences in RT. This, in fact, is the case. First, to attain RT measurements that are stable, many must be averaged or otherwise grouped. Second, once grouped, the range of individual differences is not only large, but larger for the old than for the young. This was reported by Miles (1931), Obrist (1953), Botwinick and Thompson (1968b), and others. The extent of individual difference is so great that many older subjects perform more quickly than younger ones. In one study where RT and age were correlated, rather than, as is done in most studies, simply comparing two or more age groups in RT, the coefficient of correlation was only .19. Only about 4 percent of the variation of RT could be accounted for by the age of the responder (Surwillo, 1963). This is hardly a basis for so much emphasis on the slowing of responses in later life.
