AGE AND BEHAVIOR: RISK OF GAIN WITH CHANCE OF LOSS - DIFFERENT PROBLEMS FOR YOUNG AND OLD - DIFFERENT RESPONSES TO DIFFERENT PROBLEMS
The Botwinick (1966) study yielded an unexpected result. It was thought that the "life situations" in which aged central characters coped with needs and problems of old people would bring out more cautiousness on the part of the elderly respondents. It was reasoned that elderly people are cautious and this would be especially true with problems that are "close to home." Just the opposite resulted. Both the elderly and young adults were more cautious in their decisions concerning young adult central characters than in those concerning aged central characters, but this pattern was accentuated among the older respondents. The older respondents, more than the younger ones, seemed to devalue the lives and problems of the aged central characters. But old and young alike performed in a manner to suggest that they regarded the aged as having less to lose than the young should a risky course of action go badly; the young, having a longer life ahead of them, have more at stake and more to lose. As logical as this conclusion may appear, it is most important to recognize that alternate possibilities exist.
