AGE AND BEHAVIOR: CAUTIOUSNESS IN DECISION - RISK OF GAIN WITH CHANCE OF LOSS - DIFFERENT PROBLEMS FOR YOUNG AND OLD
A perusal of the 12 "life situations" indicated that they mostly involve problems and activities of young adults. The central characters go into new business ventures, play football, apply to graduate schools, marry. While some of these are activities elderly people engage in too, for the most part they typify concerns of young adults. To offset this, an investigation was carried out with "life situations" about aged central characters facing problems representative of their own age group. Would aging patterns in cautiousness be exacerbated when problems and consequences were tied more intimately to their circumstances? In addition to the 12 "life situations" of Wallach and Kogan (1961), 12 others were written about aged people (Botwinick, 1966). A total of 24 situations were thus available, making a 24-item questionnaire. As before, each of the items called for a decision based upon a desired probability of outcome before venturing a risk: the higher the desired probability, the more cautious the responder was considered to be. *148\220\8*
