AGE AND BEHAVIOR: PERSONALITY AND COGNITION IN CAUTIOUS BEHAVIOR IN SUMMARY
It is an old, popular belief that attitudes, interests, and values change with the generations so that older adults become characterized by a conservative outlook and a cautious behavior. Research studies during the 1920s through the 1940s substantiated this popular belief somewhat, but in the main they showed only slight age trends toward conservatism, if any at all. Studies since then, those carried out since 1950, were less concerned with attitudes, interests, and values than they were with performances which could be explained on the basis of some form of cautiousness. Conservatism and cautiousness have in common the disinclination to make a change for the sake of gain when loss may be the result instead. Several lines of investigation have suggested that in later life there is more cautiousness. It seems to stem from a discomfort with the uncertain, with the expectation and fear of failure. Cautiousness is thus seen as a defense for ego-saving purposes. Perhaps for the purpose of this defense, the elderly seem to value accuracy over speed; often they will avoid responding altogether, and avoid making mistakes in so doing. While there is controversy whether or not the trade-off of speed for accuracy, and the omission error for the commission error, is volitional in nature, there is little doubt that older people do not tend to risk being wrong for the sake of being right or fast. Perhaps it is for this reason that older people seem to desire great certainty from a situation before committing themselves to a response. Certainty provides a high level of confidence in being correct. Ambiguous situations provide little information and structure, and are thus uncertain. Given clear structure and direction, the older person may be expected to perform optimally. As tasks become difficult, as ambiguity increases, as the need to change patterns of thought and behavior remain unclear, the older person may fare less and less well. *144\220\8*
