AGE AND BEHAVIOR: PERSONALITY AND COGNITION IN CAUTIOUS BEHAVIOR - FACTORS RELATED TO CAUTIOUSNESS - SOCIAL ORDER
Youth, not old age, is valued in Western culture—the old try to appear young, and the young try to remain young. It is a social phenomenon against man's nature; it is a pattern destined to make man at the end part of his life feel unable, unworthy, and unwanted. As old age is reached, people tend to withdraw from other people and from activities, and become increasingly turned inward. There is a disengagement from the social scene. The theory and problem of disengagement is discussed fully in chapter 5; here, it need only be recognized that there is a point of view that this disengagement is more a function of society's response to the old person than it is a natural consequence of his being. Society is organized to meet man's aging with condemnation, with rejection, with the expectation of his failure. Man incorporates the values of society and thus, when old, accepts his own unworthiness. If this be correct, it is only to be expected that the aged would inhibit response, value accuracy, make the omission error, vacillate, desire certainty—be cautious. It is interesting that Edwards and Wine (1963) reported a cluster of personality traits which they labeled "yielding to society." *142\220\8*
