If old age is associated with discomfort in uncertain situations, with a need for structure, with the expectation of poor accomplishments, why is this so? There seem to be three classes of reasons: factors of ability, environmental demands, and personality. If ability declines with age, an expectation of failure is realistic. It is very important, however, to ascertain whether goals and activities based on these abilities are necessary, or even desirable. Why should an old man engage in competitive market-place activities, or sports, or even in interpersonal power relationships? Does the social order work to the old man's advantage, or does it so structure the reward system as to make him a loser? After all, in any practical sense, a decline matters only if it is relevant to a man's needs, real or imagined. Are personality changes associated with age contributory to cautious attitudes? Are such changes of primary importance in understanding cautiousness in later life? These three classes of factors—ability levels, environmental demands, and personality considerations—have not been investigated very thoroughly, as they relate to cautiousness. If they were, we would have a better understanding than we do about the large individual differences in cautiousness seen even among the elderly. *140\220\8*
